South Africa: Provincial roads maintenance backlog nearly 11 000 km

(Creamer Media's Engineering News) - The Department of Transport has set aside a R6.47-billion grant to ease the road maintenance and repair backlog for provincial roads in South Africa during the 2011/12 financial year, said Transport Minister Ben Martins.
In response to a Parliamentary question, the Minister said South Africa had a backlog of 10 980 km in the provincial paved road network and 69 216 km in the gravel road network.
Another R9.7-billion provincial road maintenance grant would be provided in the 2012/23 financial year.
Martins noted that the department was driving the implementation of Road Asset Management Systems by all road authorities to enable ease and efficiency of prioritising, planning and scheduling of maintenance strategies to ensure optimal use of the limited funding allocation. There was no ring-fenced funding for dealing with backlogs.
