Rwanda announces new water project

Rwanda has seen the launch of a new water, sanitation and hygiene project (WASH) worth $20 million, The New Times has reported.

It has been confirmed that the project, which is set to last five years, will cover nine districts in the country.

The project will ensure that clean water and sanitation provision is spread throughout communities, with as many as 675,000 set to see a benefit to their living conditions.

"Through Ubuzima WASH programme, we will contribute to achieving the fourth goals of the MDGs; which is about reducing child mortality rates," explained George Gitau, World Vision Rwanda national director.

In areas covered by World Vision Rwanda, the project is designed to ensure that 95 per cent of people aged five or under have access to a safe water supply.

By 2017, the Rwandan government hopes to ensure that access to safe water rises from 71 per cent in this year to 100 per cent.
