Nigerian govt confirms plans to construct new port

The Nigerian Federal Government has revealed more details of an ambitious plan to build a new inland river port in Kogi State, Leadership has reported.

Labaran Maku, the minister of information, confirmed that the new port in Jamata community in Kogi State will cost N4.1billion (£16.1 million).

In addition to this, it has been revealed that the government is to dredge rivers in Imo and Delta States.

Mr Maku explained that the project, which should help to drive economic growth in the area, should take around 57 weeks to reach completion.

Thereafter, the port should become a useful link between various coastal ports in Nigeria.

Furthermore, it should ease the movement of agricultural and petroleum goods - both of which are critical to the country's economy - and the importation of essential goods.

The creation of a new port is key to the government's plan to grow the economy by expanding commercial activities in the region.
