Nigeria has been ranked very low in an Africa Water Poverty Index indicating that the country is lagging behind in meeting the water requirement of its population.
But the Minister of water Resources, Mrs. Sarah Reng Ochekpe, says the ranking is a call for more effort to develop the sector in Nigeria.
She said all hope is not lost because the current administration is focused on reviving the sector as evident in the completion of some major dams across the country to meet the water requirement of Nigerians.
Presenting the ministry's achievement at the Ministerial platform ahead of the Democracy Day and one year anniversary of President Goodluck Jonathan, Ochekpe said the Northern Ishan Water Supply project in Edo State with a plant capacity of nine million litre of water per day has been completed at the cost of N2.5 billion and would service communities of Uromi, Ubiaja, Ugengu, Ugboha and Iguben which have a population of 500,000.
