Nigeria: Govt minister reveals progress of Kashimbila dam

he Nigerian federal government has reassured citizens in the state of Taraba that the construction of the Kashimbila dam is on schedule, Vanguard reports.

Darius Dickson Ishaku, the minister of state for power, has dampened fears that the dam is to be abandoned.

On the contrary, he said that the project is due to be completed on time and remains a key part of the government's long-term objective to realise the economic potential of the 40 mega watt capacity hydropower.

Indeed, such projects are key to improving general living standards, according to Mr Dickson Ishaku, who acknowledged that electricity failures and other infrastructure problems continue to blight the country's quest for economic growth.

Once the dam is complete, it will serve a multitude of functions, including providing electricity to people in the state as well as delivering pipe-borne water for domestic use.

The government said that it is scheduled for completion in April 2014.
