Mozambique to fund road repairs on dozens of routes

A Mozambique council is to invest 50 million metcais (£1.21 million) in repairing and improving its roads to help boost the local economy.

Dozens of routes have fallen into disrepair in the country's capital of Maputo, but money is now being put towards resurfacing, according to Mayor David Simango.

Companies have already been chosen to carry out the work in Nlhamankulu, KaMaxakeni, KaMavota and KaMubukwane,allafrica.com reports.

Furthermore, the council is looking at extending the Dom Alexandre road into the neighbouring district of Marracuene, in addition to tendering for the repair of the Avenida Cardeal Alexandre dos Santos road in the city.

The news provider also reports that the General Candido Mondlane road will be resurfaced as part of the improvements in the next few months.

It comes after the Islamic Development Bank pledged £42.5 million last October to the country over the next three years to finance various infrastructure projects including roads and energy improvements.
