Kenya Power lays first underground cable

1 mars 2012

Kenya Power has announced that it is near to converting the overhead power lines to an underground cable system in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, as well as Mombasa and Kisumu, Capital FM has reported.

According to Joseph Njoroge, the managing director of Kenya Power, the firm has already begun laying the underground cable.

The first cable, Mr Njoroge confirmed, has already been installed, running from a sub-station in the Central Business District to State House.

"We are working on a proposal to undertake the works in Upperhill as a pilot then we move to Industrial area and then Mombasa," Mr Njoroge commented.

"In two years time we should be commissioning in Upperhill and in Industrial area and Mombasa maybe in two and a half years."

Once the project is finally complete, he said that there will be significant savings in terms of unit sales and an improvement in service delivery.
