Kenya: LBDA announces plans for new dams project

The Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA) has announced that it is set to spend as much as Sh125 billion (£94.8 billion) constructing new dams in 2012, The Star reports. 

The authority represents 17 counties within Lake Victoria region and is determined to improve power supply for the millions of Kenyans who live in the Nandi and Magwagwa region.

According to the LBDA, the overarching purpose of the project is to improve power supply, as well as strengthen the infrastructure surrounding water supply and irrigation.

Kabok P Aguko, the managing director of the LBDA, explained: "Sh75 billion will go towards the establishment of Magwagwa Dam and Sh50 billion will spend on the Nandi Dam. 

"Kericho county is going to get Sh15 million on environmental conservation."

As many as 16 million people live in the regions overseen by the LBDA, meaning that around 40 per cent of the Kenyan population should see an improvement once the dams project is complete.
