Funds finalised for Kunzvi Dam

A group of private contractors have finalised the $370 million (£231 million) needed to fund the Kunzvi Dam project in Zimbabwe.

The Zimbabwe Herald reports that a timeline could not be given on when construction will begin, but that $70 million of the funding is for the construction of the dam and the other $300 million will be used for pump stations.

Located 67 km north-east of Harare, near Juru Growth Point, the construction project will dam the Nyaguwi River, producing 250,000 cubic metres of water daily.

Samuel Sipepa Nkomo, water resources development and management minister for Zimbabwe, said that the government are "satisfied" with the progress that has been made.

However, he added that some details were still to be finalised before construction could start, including resolving "the distribution of the water for Harare, Chitungwiza and Norton".

Philanthropist George Soros recently pledge $27.4 million to the Millennium Villages project across Africa, part of which will go towards improving water access.
