Ethiopia road contracts awarded as transport investment increases

Ethiopia's Addis Abeba City Roads Authority (AACRA) has awarded two road construction contracts to local companies as part of an investment of 326.8 million Birr (£11.75 million) in the country's transport system, All Africa reports.

A deal of around 144.4 million Birr has been struck with Tidhar Excavation & Earthmoving Ltd to create a 2.8-kilometre, 30-metre wide road between Abune Petros and Pasteur.

Furthermore, Gebrehiwot General Contractor has been awarded a 179.4 million Birr contract to construct the road between Goro Roundabout and the ICT Park. The 3.2-kilometre stretch of road will be 30 metres wide and will help to improve access to the ICT Park.

According to the news provider, both will be completed within 540 days of the contracts being signed. AACRA has also awarded a design contract for five more roads in the area, with completion around five years away.

It comes as Ethiopia's railway system is set to receive a boost after the China Communications Constructions Company agreed a deal to help construct a new line in the north of the country.
