AfDB agrees to loans for water infrastructure projects in Niger

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved loans, which will be put towards a water infrastructure project in Niger.

Finance worth $33.84 million (£21.9 million) from The Global Agriculture and Food Security Program and $15 million from the African Development Fund (ADF) will be lent to the nation to improve water and sanitation initiatives in Maradi, Tahoua and Zinder.

The Water Mobilization Project to Enhance Food Security will see the development of 17,000 hectares of irrigation area, as well as the construction of mini dams.

Rural roads will also be built in order to boost access to water supplies.

In addition to this, Niger will receive a $25.8 million ADF loan and $5.9 million Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Multi-donor Trust Fund grant to improve water quality through its National Rural Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Programme.

This comes after The Citizen reported that the Tanzanian government will invest Sh635 billion (£250.26 million) into a new dam to increase water supply to its capital, Dar es Salaam.
