New port will boost African trade, says Zuma

South African president Jacob Zuma has welcomed the opening of a new port in the Eastern Cape and suggested that the infrastructure project is set to make a huge impact on trade relations in the region.

The Port of Ngqura in the Eastern Cape is set to become the continent's premier trans-shipment hub, according to Mr Zuma, who explained that it will act as a link between the world's east and west trade routes.

Mr Zuma is quoted by the Biz Community as saying: "The development of this port is not a once-off local event, it reflects the long-term vision and economic plan of the government of South Africa.

"The port is a key infrastructure project, given its location and potential, and its launch is another step forward on a journey of economic development and transformation."

Since the port opened in 2009, it has exceeded its operational targets fourfold and looks set to be a catalyst for regional growth, Mr Zuma observed.
