Federal govt announces power supply plans

The Nigerian federal government has announced an innovative plan to generate power for potentially thousands of people in the country.

Professor Barth Nnaji, the Nigerian minister of power, revealed that there are plans afoot to generate power from as many as 200 incomplete or abandoned dams in the country, the Daily Trust has reported.

Speaking at the 2012 Aret Adams lecture series in Lagos, he explained that the move to make use of the dams forms part of a broader government plan to diversify the country's source of power.

"Those in this audience with ideas on how they can partner with the government to turn this idea into a good business venture are welcome," Professor Nnaji said.

"In keeping with the policy of diversification, a 10MW wind farm is being built in Katsina State."

He added that any businesses keen to generate renewable energy are welcome to approach the government with proposals.
