DRC: Telephone company Zain officially becomes Airtel

14 December 2010

The mobile telephone operator Airtel replaces the brand Zain in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with effect from its official launch last Thursday.

Part of the Indian group Barti, Airtel has a presence in 16 African countries. The brand has 200 million customers all over the world.

"Airtel will have a positive impact on the communities where we are going to do business, due to the extension of our network to rural areas and through our initiatives in the domain of education", affirmed CEO Manoj Kohl, whose words were quoted by the Mediacongo website.

The group announced its intention to invest 400 million dollars over the coming three years to improve the quality of its network and to extend it to the most remote areas.

In June 2010, Barti spent 10 billion dollars to acquire the fifteen operations of Zain in Africa and one in the Seychelles.
