$14.2 billion needed for infrastructure improvements in Zimbabwe

14 April 2011

Zimbabwe needs about $14.2 billion (£8.7 billion) to rehabilitate the existing infrastructure in the country.

This is according to African Development Bank (AfDB) president Donald Kaberuka, who claimed that the investment is needed to "add new capacity to meet growing demand during the decade ahead"

According to the AfDB leader, proposed programmes for improving infrastructure in Zimbabwe will be financed from the national budgets and contributions by state enterprises, donors and the private sector.

He said that urgent actions were required with regards to the country's external debt, to make way for the mobilisation of a proposed $2.8 billion donor support.

"Donor financing is central to the rehabilitation program," Mr Kaberuka added.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Standard recently reported that the country requires $16 billion investment in the transport infrastructure of the country.

The news provider claimed that the country's roads used to be considered among the best in southern Africa, but it noted that years of neglect have left them in a state of disrepair.
