ICA conducts survey on renewable energy in Africa

The Infrastructure Consortium for Africa (ICA) is conducting a survey to seek views on how to encourage the growth of renewable energy in Africa, in the lead-up to its Annual Meeting in Abidjan on 16 and 17 November 2015.
The Renewable Energy in Africa Survey focuses on a newly-published background paper commissioned by the ICA that has researched the current flow of renewable energy investments in Africa and the role played by national, regional and international public and private institutions and initiatives to promote investment.
Outlining the purpose behind the survey Mohamed Hassan, ICA Coordinator, said:
"Responses to the survey will help policy makers in determining a framework for improving the effectiveness of renewable energy initiatives focused on Africa.
"The survey will be particularly important in informing discussion at our meeting about the sharing of best practice, and the critical success factors required to support successful renewable energy initiatives."
The background paper highlights the challenges faced by those developing and investing in renewable energy projects in Africa to achieve the objective of implementing at least 10 GW of additional renewable energy by 2020, as set out by the African Renewable Energy Initiative which was agreed upon at the G7 summit in 2015. It suggests that, without appropriate support and intervention, investment in renewable energy is likely to be limited to a few countries and will benefit only a few users.
The paper acknowledges the significant efforts already made by Pan-African institutions to address these issues, and to adopt a coordinated approach to promoting energy access, renewables and energy efficiency. And it suggests that the time is ripe to spread the knowledge gained from these early initiatives, and apply them for the benefit and prosperity of all African citizens.
To achieve this, the paper recommends that participants at the ICA Annual Meeting should look at how national, regional and international initiatives could expand and accelerate their efforts to promote renewable energy investment across Africa. This could be done by, in particular, harmonising initiatives and assistance so that all regions of the continent, and all sizes of projects, have a fair chance to materialise, and regional synergies are maximized.
The ICA Annual Meeting will be attended by African leaders, policy makers, funding institutions, the private sector and senior representatives of G8 partner governments and institutions.
