Today, over 270 transboundary aquifer systems have been identified worldwide,[ 1 ] but very few are the target of projects aiming at a better mutual management or, where this question is raised, only cover certain aspects. For instance, transboundary aquifer systems are still too rarely taken into account for Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM). One of the main challenges is to narrow the gap between the availability of — still poorly evaluated — water resources and an increasing demand that, in some places, already is no longer satisfied. This gap between supply and demand may become even larger under the influence of climate change.
