Gabon: Work soon to start on modernization of Port-Gentil airport

26 July 2011

Modernization and restructuring works on the airport at Port-Gentil in Gabon are to start Friday August 5.

In Libreville on July 20, Minister of Transport Julien Nkoghé Békalé signed several contracts with the companies responsible for the works, reports the daily news site "L’Union".

Financed to the amount of 30 billion francs CFA (65.7 million dollars) by the Gabonese State and Total Gabon, the works concern the reconstruction of the runway, the construction of a security barrier around the airport and the renovation of all the car parks.

The runway will also be enlarged, from 1900 to 2600 meters. Once completed, it will be able to accommodate aircraft of the type 737-800.

The main purpose of these works is to bring the airport international status and so to participate in the economic development of the whole region.

The works should be completed by 2012, reports the newspaper Gabonews.
